Cleaning your makeup brushes is probably and should be every girl's number one makeup routine. Think about all the makeup, dirt, and oils that are trapped in those uncleaned brushes, especially to the girls who throw their brushes in their dirty makeup bags and leave them in there for months (gross!). This all leads up to break outs and even eye infections.

You should be cleaning your brushes frequently - I like to clean mine at least once a week. So if you are practicing this routine religiously, you do know how expensive those brush shampoos can get and not to mention, some of them don't entirely work either! I found that this method using items everyone already probably has in their homes has been the most effective and most affordable.

You will need:
  • Dish soap (this is what disinfects and cleans your brush)
  • Extra virgin olive oil or extra light like I use (the dish soap will dry out the bristles - the olive oil will act as your conditioner)
  • Plate (I use tupperware)

  1. Evenly distribute your dish soap and olive oil onto your plate.
  2. Take your first dirty brush and in circular motions, stir it up in the mixture.
  3. Continue to move the brush in circular motions but this time on the palm of your hand. You will begin to see all the makeup come off. Then place it on top of a paper towel.
  4. (I do 3-5 brushes before I do this step) Under warm water in your sink, continue the same circular motions or swirls you did on the palm of your hand. Once the water is clear, that means the brush is clean.
  5. Gently wipe them dry on the paper towel to remove excess water
  6. Place them on a flat surface to dry (some people like the to dry them with the hairs facing downward, I personally don't.)

If you have brush gaurds, place them on. These will protect from dust and dirt and will reshape the bristles.
